Hypnosis should be offered to patients with IBS, Swedish research suggests

Does Hypnotherapy Help IBS?

Hypnotherapy for IBS
Research has consistently shown hypnotherapy to be an effective form of treatment for many individuals who suffer from IBS. Treatment effects include:
  • Decrease in abdominal pain
  • Reduction in diarrhoea episodes
  • Reduction of chronic constipation
  • Decrease in visceral hypersensitivity (internal pain)
  • Positive effect on motility (the speed and strength of stomach contractions)
  • Improved quality of life
  • Reduced doctor visits
  • Reduced use of medication
  • Decrease in depression and anxiety
  • Results are maintained long after treatment ends

An article from Science Daily details  Studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, show that psychological treatment using hypnosis may offer effective, lasting relief. The studies are part of a thesis which concludes that hypnotherapy should be used in clinical care of patients with severe IBS.
