Hypnotherapy - What is it all about?

What is Hypnotherapy?  The best description I have heard is that hypnotherapy is an altered state of awareness that allows access to the subconscious. In effect it is a trance-like state, but one in which the subject is in complete control.

Can anyone be hypnotised? New research has been done into this which shows that some people are able to go into a trance quickly and more deeply than others. Most people can go into at least a light trance which is the state you need to be in for hypnotherapy to be effective.

What will it feel like when I am hypnotised?People experience the hypnotic state in many different ways. Most people say they feel a deep sense of relaxation as if all the tension has left their body

I am nervous and need to know if I will I lose control when I am under hypnosis? No, you remain in full control during hypnosis. It is impossible to be hypnotised against your will. Hypnosis is not about the control of the hypnotist, it is about working together so that you can be helped to make the change needed to improve your life.

Can I get stuck in a hypnotic trance? No, if at any time you wanted to come out of a trance, you could do so entirely by yourself. In effect all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, so there is no possibility of you being left in a trance.

Will I tell you all my secrets when I am hypnotised? You can’t be forced to say or do anything under hypnosis that you don't want to, and besides you are in complete control the whole time.

How is hypnotherapy different from other forms of therapy? Hypnotherapy enables the therapist to bypass your critical and analytical conscious mind and talk directly to your subconscious mind.

Is hypnotherapy the same as stage hypnotism? No.  Hypnotherapy is used to provide a professional and caring solution for the client, not for entertainment. The hypnotherapist works ethically and is guided by a code. An ethical therapist  will continue to develop professionally all the time, making sure to keep up to date with the latest research and learning new techniques to ensure they provide the clients with the best treatment available.

Am I asleep when I am hypnotised? No, lots of people think this and although hypnotherapy has been described as feeling like the stage just before you fall asleep. Medically this is not actually the case.

Are there side effects? No, hypnotherapy is a natural experience that is drug-free and has no side effects.
